The Migration Miracle Continues!
This is the first monarch butterfly larva I've seen this spring. It's tiny, hardly big enough to be seen with the naked eye. The tell-tale evidence is the white chewed sections of milkweed leaves. A half dozen plants have larvae so far. I haven't seen eggs... have hardly looked for them.
I haven't seen many larvae this year in my garden, and those I have seen often have been dead, but there are more adult monarchs than before, some mating. Maybe the larvae are hiding better. I saw one twitch like it was dying and then it dropped to the ground. Later it was back on the plant feeding like normal. Maybe some of them have a drop escape plan for defence.
